Last years news....
I forgot to post from of last year's news... But they are still up to date! :D Most of it it's science related, hope you enjoy them.
Science:
-Solar-powered sea slug harnesses stolen plant genes. They then turned their attention to the sea slug's own DNA and found one of the vital algal genes was present. Its sequence was identical to the algal version, indicating that the slug had probably stolen the gene from its food.
-Platinum-free fuel cell promises cheap, green power. Lin Zhuang's team at Wuhan University in Hubei province, China, has designed a new membrane that is alkali, not acidic - making it possible to use a much cheaper, nickel, catalyst.
-Spinning water droplets behave like black holes. The team levitated the droplets using an effect called diamagnetism: when an external magnetic field was applied to the droplets, they created their own opposing magnetic field, initiating a repulsive force strong enough to counteract gravity. To set the droplets spinning, they implanted two tiny electrodes, which generated an electric field.
-Drugs unlock the body's own stem cell cabinet. "It's promoting self-healing," says Sara Rankin of Imperial College London, and a member of the team that discovered the stem-cell liberating effects. "We're simply boosting what's going on naturally."
-Ten extinct beasts that could walk the Earth once again. No... not Hitler. Mammoths! So besides the mammoth, what other extinct beasts might we coax back to life?
-Immoral advances: Is science out of control? I don't see it black, but it is an interesting article and worth considering.
Technology:
-Nanotech clothing fabric 'never gets wet'. The spiky structure of the 40-nanometre-wide filaments strengthens that effect, to create a coating that prevents water droplets from soaking through the coating to the polyester fibres underneath. The water comes to rest on the top of the nanofilaments like a fakir sitting on a bed of nails.
-Space station urine recycler may be fixed. By title alone deserves to be read... :D lol, space plummer fixes your urinal.
