Comeback

I know... I have been absent and empty minded... Trying to make up for the information blackout, I post here some rather old news. But good news are always welcome.

Technology:

-Most powerful laser in the world fires up. The Texas Center for High-Intensity Laser Science will use the laser to create and study matter at some of the most extreme conditions in the universe, including gases at temperatures greater than those in the sun and solids at pressures of many billions of atmospheres.
-Adapted aircon can track movement in the home. After a lengthy training process, software could use the sensor data to identify which particular door was active in a 10-20 room house 75-80% of the time. It could also detect when a person walked through a particular door 60-75% of the time.
-IBM creates working racetrack memory device. The bits – 1s and 0s – of data in racetrack memory are stored in the tiny magnetic domains of a very thin U-shaped wire. A magnetic field is used to write data to the domains. Pulsing current through the wire pushes those domains along the track, past sensors that can read off the data.

Society:
-Attention job-seekers: astronauts wanted. I always wanted to be one :D
Gimundo Canada: TV Show Helps Man Survive 5 Days in Wilderness. Some good came out of those silly TV shows. But another good news is that there is actually a place on the internet for more good news besides this blog. I'm happy to not be the only one :D

Ecology:
-Amazon Condoms To Preserve Forests and Reduce Imports in Brazil. No, it's not Amazon.com but Amazon the forest... I was a bit skeptical but then I read that this initiative will help preserve the Amazon by ensuring the sustainable exploitation of the materials, and will reduce the amount of imported condoms to the country, which are distributed freely to fight AIDS as part of a national campaign. Brazil is the largest importer of condoms in the world, the Health Ministry informed according to BBC Mundo.
-Costa Rica Is 99% Powered By Renewable Energy. Costa Rica is working to become the world’s first carbon-neutral country. Other countries vying to be first are Monaco, Norway, New Zealand and Iceland.

Portugal:
Desemprego desce: Madeira regista maior decréscimo do país. É sempre bom ouvir destas coisas...
